Former international Peter Fulton made a promising start to the summer with a century against Otago in a two-day warm-up match in Rangiora yesterday.
Fulton retired undefeated on 107. The other Canterbury batsman to impress was Joel Abraham, who scored 70 before he was dismissed.
Canterbury reached 297 for three by stumps.
Otago coach Vaughn Johnson gave his side a six out of 10 in its first hit-out this summer.
"We got exactly what we wanted to get out of it today," Johnson said.
"The bowlers had a good day in the park and got a solid workout. Six out of 10 is pretty good."
Otago strike bowler Neil Wagner took one for 41 from 15 overs, and Sam Wells and Craig Smith also picked up a wicket each.
Injury-prone fast bowler James McMillan went wicket-less but got through 14 overs and transplanted Aucklander Jimmy Neesham got through plenty of work as well, clocking in with none for 46 from 18 overs.
Otago will reply today and the sides will play a warm-up one-day match tomorrow. The teams meet in the opening round of the Plunket Shield next month.
