Its match against Central Districts in Invercargill yesterday fell victim to the weather, with only eight overs bowled by the home team before the rain arrived, leading to the abandonment of the match.
It is the third game in six for Otago in the one-day competition which has had to be abandoned because of the weather.
It also had three games in the twenty/20 competition canned because of poor weather.
In the action which did take place yesterday, Otago had started like a house on fire, reducing Central Districts to 10 for three wickets, before it got through to 34, and then the heavens opened.
The rain never went away and was disappointing for Cricket Southland officials as the city has enjoyed good weather for the majority of the summer.
Otago Volts coach Vaughn Johnson was frustrated about the weather, especially after the side had started so well.
"We had them three down for next to nothing and the guys were bowling well and the rain came and has not stopped,'' he said.
"It is frustrating, very frustrating. You can't comment on the weather all the time but it does your head in. The guys train hard, work away on their skills and get keyed up for important games and then this happens.
"The worst thing about it is that Canterbury and Auckland have done well and we're going to slip behind.''
Otago now has 15 points with just two games left to play, with Auckland five points ahead of them and Canterbury just two points ahead. The top four teams qualify for the finals, and Otago is assured of making that group, but being in the top two teams has the advantage of not going straight into a sudden death game.
In yesterday's brief play, Neil Wagner grabbed two wickets in his first two overs while Ian Butler also chipped in with a wicket and apart from Mathew Sinclair hitting three boundaries in one over, Otago looked to be on top.
Otago's next match is against Northern Districts in Hamilton on Sunday.
