The issue of whether the Dunedin senior club cricket competition is strong enough to support eight teams was raised again this weekend when Pelichet Bay played a man short.

The expansion club was introduced to the competition last year so a bye round would be avoided.

But on Saturday the Bay was forced to bat with just 10 players when university exams and sickness meant several players were not available.

Dunedin Cricket Association operations assistant Tim O'Sullivan agreed it was not a good look but defended the decision to have an eight-team competition.

"It is disappointing but the whole idea is to take away the bye, and they have been playing competitive cricket," O'Sullivan said.

"Obviously, they beat Kaikorai last week and were without [Otago opening bowler] Neil Wagner this week due to illness."

Pelichet Bay was dismissed for just 50 runs after bowling University-Grange out for 228.

The extra batsman would not have made any difference, O'Sullivan said.

"They did have 11 on the field, they just batted with 10 players.

"He was just making up numbers on the field, and in terms of the game he wasn't required to bat anyway.

"He could have batted if they needed one off the last over or something like that."

University-Grange 228 beat Pelichet Bay 50 at Ocean Grove

Pelichet Bay seamer Regan Flaws did his best with the ball but a pitiful batting display led to his side being walloped by University-Grange.

Flaws took six for 28 from nine overs to help dismiss Grange for 228.

Jesse Simpson top-scored with a fine innings of 84 and Anthony Bullick (30) and Craig Smith (28) added valuable runs.

But Pelichet Bay's chase never got under way.

Playing a man short, the Bay capitulated for just 50 runs.

George Spittle top-scored with 12 and extras (10) was the next biggest contributor.

Bullick and Jason Hynes bowled unchanged, with Bullick taking three for 21 and Hynes five for 29.

Taieri 191 lost to North East Valley 192/9 at Bayfield

Gary Payne steered North East Valley to a dramatic one-wicket win over Taieri with a superb undefeated innings of 83.

Payne had some support from Mat Harvie with 30 and Simon Murley with 19, but pretty much played a lone hand to help overhaul Taieri's total of 191.

Callum Thompson (three for 26) was the pick of the Taieri bowlers.

Reuben Simpson also took three wickets but was on the expensive side, conceding 49 runs from 8.5 overs.

Earlier, Anthony Harris scored 59 and George Harper thrashed 79 to help Taieri reach 191.

Jamie Murley was the chief destroyer, with five for 41, while his brother Simon took two from 29 from 10 overs.

Kaikorai 172 beat Green Island 140 at Sunnyvale

Kaikorai strike bowler Dave Webb took four for 26 to help set up an upset win over Green Island.

Webb got rid of the dangerous Hamish Rutherford and experienced all-rounder Mark Joyce to help undermine Green Island's chase.

The swamp foxes needed 173 for victory but were dismissed for 140.

Jordan Sheed top-scored with 37 and Jamie Munro scored 32.

Earlier, Colin Aitken compiled a valuable 40 and Daniel Duke scored 35 to help Kaikorai reach 172.

Blair Soper took three for 26 from seven overs for Green Island and Sheed grabbed two quick wickets.

Albion 180 lost to Carisbrook-Dunedin 186/6 at Culling Park

An unbeaten eighth-wicket partnership by Rhys Phillips (22) and Dan Willemsen (50) guided Carisbrook-Dunedin to a three-wicket win over Albion.

Batting first, Albion posted 180, with Otago batsman Shaun Haig scoring 58 and the in-form Jamie Glenn making 34.

The pair shared an opening stand of 64 but once they were out the innings fell away dramatically.

Having dismissed Albion for 180, Carisbrook-Dunedin was limping along at 114 for seven.

The wickets were shared around but Otago left-arm spinner Nick Beard bowled particularly well to take two for 22 from 10 overs.

Fellow slow bowler Sean Eathorne also had a good day at the bowling crease, nabbing three for 26 for Carisbrook.

Otago medium-pacer Warren McSkimming was also impressive with two for 17 from 10 overs.
