Cricket: Darren Broommaking his mark

If Otago is looking for a replacement batsman when Neil Broom is on duty with the Black Caps, then it needs look no further than his family tree.

Younger brother Darren announced his arrival on the Dunedin senior club scene with a stunning century to help North East Valley thrash Kaikorai by 120 runs.

The younger Broom (24), who was one of the leading club batsmen in the Christchurch club competition last season, has transferred south this summer in hopes the move will do for his career what it did for his sibling's.

Neil Broom transferred to Otago in 2005-06 and quickly cemented a spot in the middle order.

Darren has played three one-dayers for Canterbury and a twenty/20 fixture with limited success, but Saturday's innings of 132 is sure to have captured the attention of the Otago selectors.

In other senior matches, Albion had a seven-wicket over a lacklustre Green Island at Culling Park.

Pelichet Bay slumped to 113 all out.

The meagre total proved no hurdle for Carisbrook-Dunedin, which reached the target with seven wickets in hand.

University-Grange piled on 270 runs for the loss of nine wickets and dismissed Taieri for 230.

North East Valley 273 for three beat Kaikorai 153 at the Oval

Centuries from Darren Broom and Simon Badger ensured North East Valley beat Kaikorai by 120 runs.

Broom and Badger shared in a 192-run stand for the second wicket, with Broom making 132 before he was trapped in front by Scott Hawkins.

Badger carried his bat, reaching 108 to help North East Valley post 273 for three.

In reply, Charlie Hendry whacked 46 and Colin Aitken 49.

But Simon Murley produced a devastating spell, taking five for 13 from six overs to help dismiss Kaikorai for 153.

Green Island 146 lost to Albion 147/3 at Culling Park

Albion opening batsman Jamie Glenn made the most of a small target and the breeze, striking some lusty blows to help seal a seven-wicket win.

An insipid batting display from Green Island meant the defending champion reached only 146.

Glenn smashed 83, with Shaun Haig content to support with an undefeated 40, as Albion made light work of the chase.

Earlier, Ollie Newton and Nick Cape knocked the top off the innings, with Newton taking four for 30 and Cape two for 22.

University-Grange 270 for nine beat Taieri 230

Strong batting and clever bowling from Michael Bracewell helped University-Grange beat Taieri by 40 runs.

Batting first, Grange piled on 270 for nine, with former Otago opener Andrew Hore scoring 60 before retiring hurt.

Jesse Simpson (76) and Mark Collie (45) kept the momentum going.

Reuben Simpson was the pick of the Taieri bowlers with two for 49 from 10 overs, and he chipped in with 39 runs.

Ant Harris whacked 58 at the top of the innings but Bracewell took four for 30 to close the run chase down.

Pelichet Bay 113 lost to Carisbrook-Dunedin 114/3

A limp batting display by Pelichet Bay sealed its fate, with Carisbrook-Dunedin galloping to a seven-wicket win.

Daniel Willemsen took two for 13 and Brad Hammell three for 17 as Pelichet Bay crashed to 113 all out.

James Fuller helped rescue some pride with 29 not out.

Tony McEntyre hit an undefeated 35 as Carisbrook-Dunedin overhauled the total with 30 overs to spare.
