Cricket: Cumming beats Bert Sutcliffe's record

For such a monumental occasion, it was certainly a low key moment.

When Otago batsman Craig Cumming worked a delivery from Mitchell Santner behind point for a single under gloomy skies at the University Oval this afternoon he overtook the great Bert Sutcliffe as the province's leading runs-scorer.

A few spectators politely rose to their feet and a stiff-looking Cumming lifted his bat to acknowledge the achievement.

He has now scored 6029 runs for the Otago, one more than Sutcliffe, but there is still a lot of work ahead.

The former test opener injured his back while fielding yesterday and looks to be in considerable pain. But with his side 144 for five at lunch, and needing a further 138 runs to avoid the follow-on mark, Cumming will have to dig deep.
