For the second year in a row, Otago Country has fallen at the final hurdle and missed out on challenging for the Hawke Cup.

Canterbury Country beat Otago Country on the first innings in Rangiora yesterday to win the right to challenge Hawkes Bay.

Otago Country won the toss on Saturday and elected to bowl with rain threatening.

When the rain eventually came, Canterbury was 93 for three with play finishing an hour early.

On the second day, Andrew Robertson progressed to an impressive 122 including 17 boundaries.

David Fulton managed 87 for a fifth-wicket stand of 111 with Robertson.

Canterbury declared at 430 for six with eight overs left in the day.

Opening bowler Ben Purvis and all-rounder Jason Domigan picked up two wickets apiece for Otago.

On the third day yesterday, Brendan Domigan (100), Cameron Rutherford (53) and Leighton Morgan (62 not out) provided the bulk of the runs as Otago was dismissed for 320.

Sam Langrope was the chief destroyer for Canterbury, taking five wickets.

Canterbury Country plays Hawkes Bay this weekend.

Former Otago batsman Jonathan Trott made an unbeaten 138 and Samit Patel added 101 to keep the England Lions firmly in control of the first game against New Zealand A at the Queenstown Events Centre yesterday.

At stumps, New Zealand A was 22 for one in reply to the Lions' 493 for five declared.

The visiting side resumed on 123 without loss and continued its strong batting into the second day, with captain and opener Robert Key managing 90 before being dismissed by Mitchell McClenaghan.

Trott played a controlled innings on his way to a century, reaching 100 off 269 balls and hitting eight boundaries.

He and Patel combined for a 150-run partnership for the third wicket, ensuring England would be in control at the end of the day.

For New Zealand A, bowlers Brent Arnel and McClenaghan picked up two wickets apiece, the other going to part-timer Kane Williamson.

The A side would have hoped to finish the day without losing a wicket but it was not to be as it finished on 22 for one, with captain Jamie How (5) and Peter Ingram (12) at the crease.

The match continues today from 10am.
