Cricket: Canterbury fight back against Otago

Canterbury have fought back in impressive style against Otago today to thwart the visitors' hopes of an easy win in their four-day match in Rangiora.

The home side had made a disastrous start to their second innings, finishing yesterday on two for three, 84 runs behind on the first innings with seven wickets in hand.

However,  through Dean Brownlie initially, then later Todd Astle and Ben McCord, the home side battled back into the match to end the day on 307 for 8, holding a lead of 221.

The batsmen took advantage of a depleted Volts attack to prosper after dangerman Neil Wagner left the field early ini the day. Radio Sport reported that Wagner was struck on the head by a ball during warm-ups this morning. He took the field briefly before leaving and did not return.

Brownlie was eventually dismissed by Mark Craig for 113, while Astle and McCord finished on 45 not out and 41no respectively.

In Wagner's absence, Craig led the Otago attack to finish the day with figures of 4 for 103.
