The morning session belonged to Otago bowling all-rounder Ian Butler.
The former Black Cap fast bowling guided his side past Northern Districts' first innings total of 275 with valuable knock of 37 not out.
He smashed left-arm spinner Bruce Martin on to the roof of the media centre to overhaul Northern's total and then took a nice catch running in from long leg to help dismiss Cameron Merchant.
At lunch on day four, Northern was 70 for one with BJ Watling undefeated on 39 and Michael Parlane at the wicket with him on five.
The match seems destined for a draw.

Otago's opening four-day match against Northern Districts looks to be heading towards a tame draw but a stout 42 run last wicket stand between Ian Butler and James McMillan has at least secured first innings points.
Butler whacked left-arm spinner Bruce Martin over the media box for six to help Otago overhaul Northern's first innings total of 275.
Otago resumed at 256 for nine needing 20 runs to secure the competition points and patiently chipped away at the target a single at a time until Butler finished with a flourish.
Otago captain Craig Cumming declared immediately with Butler undefeated on 37 and McMillan on eight.
Northern 275 (Kane Williamson 82, Michael Parlane 41, Nathan McCullum three for 46)
Otago 277/9 (Craig Cumming 85, Neil Broom 54, Ian Butler 37no, Trent Boult 5/58)
