Opener Michael Bracewell guided Town to a four-wicket win against Country in a one-day game at Brookland's yesterday.

The game doubled as a trial and was the Otago squad's last hit-out before its summer starts next month.

The hard-hitting left-hander scored 83 from 102 deliveries in a mature innings as Town ran down Country's total of 197 for nine.

The 20-year-old was prepared to accumulate and wait for opportunities. He had plenty of help from Jamie Glenn, who scored five fours and two sixes in his innings of 47. Iain Robertson chipped in with an undefeated 27 to finish the job.

"Michael got a couple of starts last week but his time in the middle today will be very useful for him," Otago coach Vaughn Johnson said.

Otago opens its Plunket Shield campaign against Canterbury in Rangiora on November 7 and there is plenty of healthy competition for the two opening spots.

Incumbents Craig Cumming and Aaron Redmond suited up for Country and had their hands full dealing with James McMillan and Neil Wagner.

McMillan generated some good pace, striking Cumming on the hand and forcing Redmond into evasive action. Redmond lost most of his poise stumbling backwards in a desperate effort to avoid being hit.

McMillan got his reward, though, from a good length delivery which took the edge of Cumming's bat.

After 10 overs Country was 25 for one and struggling to create any momentum.

The Broom brothers, Neil (32) and Darren (47), top-scored and Mark Craig (26) and Craig Smith (22) added some valuable runs to help Country reach a middling total.

Wagner was the pick of the Town bowlers, taking three for 41 from 10 overs and Ollie Newton (2 for 34) and Sam Wells (2 for 45) kept the pressure on Country's batting line-up.

Ian Butler bowled a tidy 10-over spell for Country, taking two for 41.

Country 197 for nine (Darren Broom 47, Neil Broom 32, Neil Wagner three for 41, Ollie Newton two for 34), Town 198 for six (Michael Bracewell 83, Jamie Glenn 47; Ian Butler two for 41, Mark Craig one for 11). Town won by four wickets.
