Cricket: Big score for Otago

Otago posted its second equal largest one-day score amassing 311 for eight in its match with Central Districts at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth today.

The total equalled the 311 for three it scored against Auckland in last year's domestic one-day final.

Black Caps wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum got the defending champions off to a good start with 82 off 94 balls.

Otago skipper Craig Cumming, fresh from a magnificent century in his last innings, added 48 from 53 deliveries and Neil Broom 39 off 37.

England all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas did what he does best and plundered five fours and three sixes in a rapid half century, and Warren McSkimming's cameo of 17 from eight deliveries helped the Volts get over the psychological 300-run barrier.

Ewen Thompson was the pick of the Central bowlers with three for 45 from 10 overs.

Central has yet to begin its chase.
