White Ferns and Otago star Suzie Bates will be at the forefront of a big push to increase the profile of the women's game.

Bates is to join the Otago Cricket Association, though her contract is with New Zealand Cricket, as women's cricket co-ordinator.

NZC is employing three other New Zealand players around the country to focus on girls' cricket and identify young talent in clubs and schools.

''The opportunity to have some financial support and allow me to commit fully to the White Ferns programme will, hopefully, be of great benefit to my cricket over the next few seasons,'' Bates said.

''The fact it also allows me to make a difference around the Otago region by investing time into the growth of girls' cricket and promoting the game gives me a chance to get involved in something I am very passionate about.''

Bates, named the player of the Women's World Cup in India, said her first challenge was to boost playing numbers.

Otago chief executive Ross Dykes was delighted aspiring female cricketers in Otago and Southland would get the opportunity to work with Bates.

''Her engaging personality and her world-class reputation make her a wonderful asset to our game and our province,'' Dykes said.

Kaikorai's game against New Plymouth Marist at the national club championships was declared a no-result in Auckland yesterday.

New Plymouth posted 262 for seven. Dan Duke was the pick of the Kaikorai bowlers with three for 49. The Dunedin club was 16 for one when rain forced play to be abandoned.

Kaikorai plays Kaipara Flats (Northern) today.
