Trent Boult will make a reasonably rare appearance in the Black Caps twenty20 side today.

The 30-year-old left-armer has not played a T20 international since February last year.

He missed the first three games of the five-game series against England.

He was back playing first-class cricket for Northern Districts and getting himself into shape for the two-game test series against the tourists later this month.

Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson who played in the three games instead, drops out of the squad to make room for Boult.

"It is nice to be back into the group and be part of the twenty20 side which I haven't been part of for a while," Boult said.

"There is a series on the line here at the moment and obviously, I'm eager to come in and put my best foot forward.

"It is a format that I have not been involved in much at the international level."

New Zealand leads the series 2-1 and a win will clinch the series victory.

Boult has played just 25 T20 internationals and is going for 8.53 an over. But he has a tremendous strike rate of 14.8 and is approaching the format like any other game of cricket.

"It is the same mindset of what I always take into most formats. I'm trying to be aggressive and I'm trying to take wickets and trying to do my role for the side."

He will look to swing the ball but the pitch and conditions at McLean Park tend to suit the batting line-ups.

"I hope I don't get a bat on it but I'm presuming it is going to be a pretty good surface."

McLean Park is on trial as much as the players. The venue's reputation has taken a hit with two of the three most recent internationals being called off or delayed.

The one-dayer against Australia in 2017 was abandoned because of drainage issues, and in January the one-dayer against India was delayed because the setting sun caused issues for the batsmen.
