Erin Bermingham stroked an unbeaten 125 to help Canterbury beat the Otago Sparks by 41 runs in a one-dayer at Molyneux Park yesterday.

The White Ferns spinner bats in the middle order for Canterbury and helped get her side out of a spot of trouble at 71 for three.

The visitors were effectively four down with opener Frances Mackay retiring hurt.

Bermingham’s hundred came up off 97 balls and it featured in a mammoth 167-run stand with Hayley Jensen for the fourth wicket.

Jensen scored 65 from 79 deliveries and the pair contributed the bulk of Canterbury’s total of 251 for five.

White Ferns and Otago captain Suzie Bates did her best to steer her side towards victory with 98 from 123 balls.

But she was bowled by Kate Broadmore, who took four for 14 to help snuff out Otago’s chase. Bates’ dismissal in the 37th over left the middle and lower order with too much to do. Morna Nielsen added 22 and Beth Langston’s cameo of 19 helped Otago get through to 210.

Canterbury had a comfortable seven-wicket win against Otago on Saturday. The Sparks got into a reasonable spot to push on and post a more competitive total than the 190 they managed.

Katey Martin had hit 70 from 88 deliveries and opener Caitlin Blakely fought hard for 35. But the home side lost its last six wickets for 48 runs.

Canterbury’s Amy Satterthwaite was instrumental in ensuring the Sparks were left short. She took care of the middle order with four for 31 from 7.5 overs.

Having done significant damage with the ball, she then combined with Mackay at the top of the order. The pair put on a 100 for the opening wicket. Satterthwaite got 67 and Mackay 49. Broadmore made a positive contribution as well with 40 not out and Canterbury reached its target with 11 overs to spare to secure a bonus point.

In the other matches, Auckland beat Central Districts in both one-dayers at Melville Park, while Wellington recorded back-to-back victories against Northern Districts in Whangarei.
