Rhys Bayly slept in late yesterday.
The Kaikorai opening batsman needed the rest. He was more than just a little stiff after playing an incredible knock.
He whacked 180 from 137 balls to help his side defeat Albion by 77 runs at Culling Park on Saturday.
Club records are sketchy, at best. But if it is not the highest, it is certainly one of the highest recorded scores in a Dunedin senior grade one-day game.
According to Bayly, though, he probably should have been out in the first over and was dropped about four times, which always helps.
That said, he was a little unlucky to get out when he did. Taylor Cumberland performed some astonishing acrobatics on the boundary to snuff out his chance of posting a double ton with a terrific catch in the penultimate over.
``It was just one of those days,'' Bayly said when asked to describe his innings.
``I would have been dropped three or four times. And in the first over I played and missed a few deliveries.
``If I was a better batsman, I would have probably nicked off.
``It is funny how that works. Because I'm not technically as good, it actually worked to my benefit.
``I was playing and missing and French cutting but, once you are in on an artificial [turf], it is quite tough for the bowlers to get you out.''
Bayly smashed 18 fours and four sixes and almost carried his bat. A lot of boundaries were crisply struck back down the ground.
When the field spread out, the right-hander took a lot of singles - hence the sleep-in and the tender muscles.
``The body is definitely feeling it today.''
Bayly said there had been talk around the club that his innings might be some sort of record. Whether it is or not, it was easily Bayly's highest score.
Bayly's brother, Taine, joined him at the wicket when he was in the 90s and he had hoped his younger sibling would help him through to his hundred. Unfortunately, Taine nicked out for a duck but he did bowl well, with two for 38.
It was a good week for the Bayly family, as their mother, Renuka Bayly, was confirmed on the board of the Otago Cricket Association on Wednesday.
