Dunedin will be well represented at the South Island Golden Gloves in Greymouth next weekend, with as many as nine fighters planning to contest the tournament.
New Zealand Fight and Fitness Academy has selected seven boxers to represent the region and up to two fighters from the Olympic Gym in Mosgiel will also compete.
Ryan Henry, from NZ Fight and Fitness, said the club was expecting good results from all of its fighters but Glen Craig, Cherine Henry and Weston Marr shape as the best prospects.
Craig is an experienced fighter, with 58 amateur bouts under his belt. He represented New Zealand at the Oceania Championships in 2007 and was the No 1 ranked fighter in the amateur heavyweight division.
He is returning from a 12-month break and a win at the South Island Golden Gloves would qualify him for the New Zealand Golden Gloves in Nelson in July.
Featherweight Cherine Henry (30) has had two fights for two wins and will step up in class to contest the Golden Gloves, and novice super heavyweight Weston Marr is also expected to do well.
Kem Christensen (novice middleweight), Thomas Cooney (novice heavyweight), Jacob Park (novice welterweight) and Cameron Young (novice light middleweight) will also represent New Zealand Fight and Fitness.
From Olympic gym, middleweight Chase Hayley (17) will make the trip to the West Coast, while Reece Hiom may also compete.
