Varsity has pulled one back to create a tight run-in to the playoffs.
It beat Ajax 60-52 on Tuesday night, leaving the two teams tied at the top of the women's club basketball table with two games remaining.
Caitlin O'Connell and Legacy Harrison nailed 18 and 17 points respectively for the students, who moved to a 7-3 season record with the win.
It was their ability to keep Ajax quiet in the second half that netted them the victory, though.
Ajax went nearly nine minutes without a field goal through the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth.
In that time, its 40-33 lead became a 51-42 deficit, which soon reached double-figures on a three-pointer from O'Connell.
Ajax hit back and, when Zoe Richards (22 points) returned late in the game, she got to the line to reduce that to 55-51.
But it was all Ajax could manage.
Harrison responded by crashing, cleaning up a missed shot and putting it back in.
She then closed the game out at the foul line.
Prior to that, Ajax had a narrow edge for most of the game.
Richards was industrious and kept its score ticking over, helping Ajax to a 16-5 quarter-time lead.
Harrison and O'Connell hit quick-fire triples to ignite the Varsity offence, taking it on a 12-0 run to snatch back the lead.
Ajax responded through Richards, taking a 28-26 lead to halftime.
Richards was again key in taking Ajax out to a 40-33 lead midway through the third quarter.
At that point, its offence dried up, though.
O'Connell hit another three-pointer, sparking another 12-0 run, giving Varsity the lead back in the process.
It was a lead it never gave up, Ajax managing just three field goals in the final 15 minutes of the game.
In the other game, the South Pac Magic beat the Andy Bay Falcons 68-54.
Magic guard Millie Simpson continued her impressive season with 24 points, while Dayna Turnbull added 18.
Madi Loudon had 13 points to lead the Falcons.
The competition now takes a break for the university holidays.
