There was no doubt the shot was going in as it left Dayna Turnbull’s hands.

The South Pac Magic point guard had just hit two three-pointers in the past two minutes, as well as another just before the fourth-quarter break.

As it splashed through the hoop, the Magic took a 48-39 lead over Ajax, part of a 12-2 run to begin the fourth quarter.

That run ultimately gave the Magic its first win of the season, beating the table-topping Ajax 57-45 in women’s club basketball on Tuesday.

Turnbull led the Magic with 22 points, including hitting five of her eight from three-point land, shooting down Ajax’s 2-3 zone.

Indeed that zone seemed to lose sight of Turnbull on several of those triples, as the former two-time league MVP took the game away from the defending champion.

The score had been 37-37 at the beginning of that 12-2 run, of which Turnbull contributed 10 of the points. The other basket was a classy euro-step from forward Letitia Mullaly (eight points).

Zoe Richards (19 points) carried the bulk of the load for Ajax, while Mille Simpson (11 points) was key in helping the Magic keep its score ticking over.

The score was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter, before the Magic pulled out to 29-26 at halftime.

Ajax pulled that back into 37-37 at the end of the third, at which point Turnbull’s spark ignited the Magic.

From there Ajax was unable to generate enough offence to haul itself back, while Turnbull, Mullaly and Simpson were key in closing the game out at the free throw line.

In the late game, Varsity pulled away late in the second quarter, and built its lead in the second half, to comfortably beat the Andy Bay Falcons 93-65.

Leila Anesi and Keira Hill top-scored for Varsity with 16 points each, while Legacy Harrison added 14.

Elise Carline led the Falcons with 21, while Alexa Duff and Aimee Lynch had 13 each.
