The former Otago Boys High School pupil made a crucial error in the dying seconds in the Junior Tall Blacks' opening game of the under-19 world championships against Argentina last week.
With five seconds remaining and his side trailing by one point, Nathan was called for travelling and the opportunity to effect a huge upset was lost.
Argentina went on to win the match 66-64.
"Obviously, that was disappointing. I kind of just forgot what I was doing.
I wasn't sure how much time we had left on the clock and I tried to have a look and forgot to ground the ball.
"It is all experience and next time, hopefully, I won't do the same thing."
It was a bitterly disappointing moment for Nathan, personally, and for the team.
But the 18-year-old has put it behind him and believes his basketball has improved despite the setback.
"I'm happy with how I went. There are a couple of things I'd change if I could go back," he said.
"We trained for a month before so we did learn a lot in that period."
Nathan was joined in the Juniors by two other former OBHS pupils, Tom Rowe and Sam King.
Former Waitaki Boys High School pupil Riki Buckrell was also in the team.
Rowe and King got limited opportunities during the tournament but Buckrell and Morgan made contributions from the bench.
Nathan clocked up 68 minutes, scored 15 points and hauled in 11 rebounds, while Buckrell got 50 minutes, 13 points and 13 boards.
The Junior Tall Blacks had the misfortune of drawing Argentina and Croatia in their first two matches and the weaker Kazakhstan last.
They lost all three matches but Nathan does not believe the draw made much difference.
"I don't think it really mattered when we got Kazakhstan. They just had a good game against us and we did not play so well. Their shooting improved so much when they played us."
Nathan was not approached by any of the 50-plus scouts at the event but said he was keen to pursue his basketball opportunities in New Zealand.
He is in the Breakers academy and will remain in Auckland until the programme winds up later this year.
"The Breakers have said they might be keen to have me back again so I'll look into that and see how that goes."
Rowe and King are also in the Breakers academy.
