The side beat the Falcons Dandelions 60-48 in women’s club basketball on Tuesday night.
It took Ajax to second on the table as the first round concluded, while the Dandelions slipped to third as they lost their second game in as many weeks.
Nicole Ruske led Ajax with 25 points, and at the other end it held the Dandelions to six points in the fourth quarter to pull away.
However, the Dandelions made the stronger start.
They shot out to a 13-6 lead through the efforts of Sereana Rokotakala and Dre Whaanga (both 10 points).
Ruske began to work her way into the game and hit the first of six three-pointers to help Ajax take a 19-18 lead to the break.
The Dandelions again pulled ahead early in the second quarter as Laura Ring scored four consecutive baskets.
But Ajax again took a one-point lead to halftime.
Three triples from Ruske helped extend that lead to 45-42 in the third quarter, before she hit another in the fourth with the margin at seven to ice the game.
It leaves Ajax unbeaten since opening night, when it lost to the table-topping South Pac Magic.
Those two will meet again as the second round begins next week.
The Magic remained unbeaten with an 88-25 win against South Pac OGHS.
OGHS offered a challenge early, before the Magic’s quality proved too much.
Letitia Mullaly was strong inside and put up a game-high 22 points, while Millie Simpson continued her classy season with 20 points.
Meanwhile, Varsity claimed a 68-40 win over the Andy Bay Falcons.
Sophie Adams top scored with 12 points for Varsity, while Tayla Macdonald had 10 for the Falcons.
