Basketball: Richardson to miss crucial Spirit game

Black Fern Claire Richardson has been sidelined with injury and will miss Otago Spirit's crucial last round robin game against Auckland today.

Richardson, who returned from Canada to play for Otago this year, was hit by a head-high tackle in the Waikato game in Hamilton last week and is suffering from a neck injury and headaches.

She has been replaced at second five-eighth by Pirates club midfield back Greer Muir, who will be making her first start of the season.

The other change in the starting line-up is Leyhana Van Vugt, who has been given the nod at blindside flanker ahead of Rachael Scott.

Otago must beat Auckland to get a finals berth. But this will be difficult because the defending champions have been unbeaten this season.

They have included five players from last year's Black Ferns team in the starting line-up: Eloise Blackwell (lock), Lydia Crossman (flanker), Justine Lavea (No 8), Emma Jensen (halfback) and Hazel Tubic (fullback).

But a finals spot is not even certain then because Waikato must beat Canterbury to give Otago a chance.

It is the first time a women's NPC game has been played at Forsyth Barr Stadium and it is certain to be a great game.
