Basketball: Recruitment seen as key

The Otago Nuggets organising committee is determined to lift its game and do a better job recruiting next season.

Nuggets stalwart and Basketball Otago board member Todd Marshall said the franchise could not afford another winless season and it was up to the committee to find some solutions.

Fielding a team capable of winning some matches was a priority, he said.

"We can't do what we did this year again," Marshall said.

"We've got to make sure we've got the players next year that we can put on the floor and win games.

"We knew it was going to be a tough year and we had to keep reminding ourselves of that, because it would be very easy to get upset that we weren't getting any wins. And we have to be realistic. We have to look at our squad and say 'Well, we had to know that this was a possibility'.

"This year will only be of any value if we put some players around them. We don't want to do this again. We don't want to enter a team that is going to be at this level again."

Marshall said the Basketball Otago board convened on Thursday night and would meet again in two weeks to review the Nuggets' campaign and plot for next season.

"We've started the review process ... we really started half way through the season just so we'd be in a position, when the finals are over, to start approaching some players. That's our intention.

"And we've spoke with Alf [Arlidge, Nuggets coach] the other night and he is keen. Again, it is a matter for the board to decide how we want to structure the franchise."

With the departure of chief executive Mark Rogers and Basketball Otago director of development Rachel Gwerder, the association is in flux.

"We've basically got a clean slate with Mark and Rachel leaving. So we need to have a really good look to see what is the best way to run the organisation. We don't really want to rush it."

The board hopes to appoint a new chief executive in the next month and is also considering appointing a general manager for the Nuggets.

The franchise was run by committee this season and, although Todd said it worked well, it was very time-consuming.

"We really want somebody, whether it's the coach or a franchise manager, to run the organisation and make the decisions on a day-to-day basis to take the pressure [off]."

Marshall suggested combining a management role with a spot on the Nuggets' playing roster might make attracting a top player to the franchise a little easier.

There is good news on the sponsorship front with Oceana Gold New Zealand operations manager Mark Cadzow hinting the naming sponsor may increase its financial contribution.

"I'll be talking to the board about what we can do for next year for sure," Cadzow replied when asked if Oceana Gold would considered increasing its financial support.

"Obviously, it was disappointing that we didn't register a win. But our young guys developed well over the season."
