Basketball: Overdue win for Manawatu

Manawatu exploded in the third quarter to register just their second National Basketball League win of the season tonight.

They accounted for competition stragglers Otago 99-70 after trouncing them 35-19 in the third period in Palmerston North.

Otago, who have now lost 15 successive matches this year, could not contain the home side during the third quarter after Tyler Amaya had done his best to keep them in the game at halftime.

Otago trailed 40-49 at that stage, with 2.01m forward Amaya accounting for 20 of their points.

He ended the match with 24 points, while Sam To'omata contributed 16 for the losers.

Richard Jeter led the scoring charts for Manawatu with 25 points while Chris Reay chipped in with 17.

The result did not improve Manawatu's overall standing. They have now earned four points but remain second from bottom, eight points behind eighth-placed Taranaki.
