Basketball: Nuggets v Giants battle of contrasting styles

The Nelson Giants will have to dictate terms if they hope to get past the Otago Nuggets in the National Basketball League semifinal in Napier tomorrow night, coach Liam Flynn says.

Flynn told the Otago Daily Times he had enormous respect for the Nuggets but was hoping the Giants' fast-paced style would prove more effective.

The Nuggets proved too powerful under the rim for the Giants in Dunedin, winning 92-59. But the Giants matched the Nuggets' physicality in the Nelson rematch, winning a tight contest 87-82.

''I've got a lot of respect for them,'' Flynn said.

''They've got a world-class point guard, they're really big across the front line and they've had a great year.

''We had a really competitive, tight and physical game when we last played them, and we expect much the same again.

''I think it will come down to which team can play the game on their terms. We play quite contrasting styles. They are more of a half-court, pound-it-inside team and we're more of a running, get-the-ball-down-the-floor team.''

Flynn said the Giants had trained well this week and knew ''the magnitude of the weekend and what is at stake''.

But while Flynn was happy with the Giants' offensive performance in the 119-110 win against the Southland Sharks in their last outing, he was less impressed with their defence on that night.

''We trained really well last week and had a good offensive performance. But this week we've had to work on our defensive effort because you need defend well to beat Otago.''

The Giants squad features two players - veteran guard Phill Jones and Darryl Jones - who have previously played for the Nuggets.
