Basketball: Nuggets not pushing panic button despite only one signing

Thomas Abercrombie sticks with Pistons.

Mike Homik moves south to Jets.

Jeremy Kench happy with Cougars.

Otago Nuggets? No news.

And no news is certainly not good news.

The Nuggets open their National Basketball League campaign against Auckland on April 13 and as of yesterday afternoon they had just one player on their books - Sam To'omata.

To make matters worse, coach Alf Arlidge has still not signed a contract, although it appears likely he will return next season.

The Nuggets completed a winless season with a 31-point loss to the Hawkes Bay Hawks at the Edgar Centre in June and have since disappeared off the radar.

Former Basketball Otago chief executive Mark Rogers left in May and the board took six months to appoint a replacement.

The board also undertook a review of the organisation's strategic direction - the only upshot of which appears to be the title of chief executive was changed to general manager.

Meanwhile, the country's best players have been busy inking contracts elsewhere.

The Southland Sharks, for example, have confirmed seven players for next season, including two former Tall Blacks.

And with two import slots to fill, the Sharks' playing roster is almost complete.

That is a point not lost on Rogers' replacement, former Nugget Markham Brown.

Brown has only been in the role for a month and can hardly be held accountable.

But the reality is he has about three months to put together a playing roster and get the Nuggets, winless since April 2008, back in the winner's circle.

But Brown is comfortable with the time frame and believes the franchise can put together a competitive team.

"I don't think we've left it too late," Brown said.

"I'm starting to get the lay of the land around the league and some of the other teams have just confirmed their entry.

"So there are some teams that are behind the eight ball there."

Brown said while the Nuggets have just one player confirmed for next year, the franchise is working with a core of players from this season - the likes of James Ross, Tom Rowe and Riki Buckrell - who are expected to re-sign.

So that is four or five players accounted for with the rest of the roster expected to be filled by two overseas players and two marquee New Zealand players.

"You've got to be quick because a lot of them [New Zealand players] sign two-year deals.

"Some have already signed but there are some real quality players still available.

"Ideally, I'd like to have some contracts wrapped up before Christmas but I think we are going to run out of time.

"I get about 20 emails a week from agents, so we are looking seriously at four or five import options there.

"With the New Zealand players, I could throw names out there but it is still at the stage where it could fall over."

Asked if Tall Black centre Craig Bradshaw was one of the players the Nuggets were targeting, Brown was evasive.

"We've approached a number of players but I'm not going to confirm or deny, because it might damage any negotiations we're doing."
