Basketball: Nuggets continue winning streak

The Otago Nuggets have kept their winning streak alive with a 110-93 win against the Taranaki Mountain Airs at the Edgar Centre tonight.

The 17-point victory was not the Nuggets best performance but they have made a perfect start to the season with six wins from six games and are at the top of the National Basketball League.

The winning-streak, though, actually stands at eight games with the Nuggets winning their last two matches in 2012.

American import Akeem Wright led the scoring for the Nuggets with 35 points. He was superb from the three point line with seven from nine and was basically responsible for keeping his side in touch after a lacklustre opening half.

His contribution did not end there, though. He filled out the rest of the stat sheet with 10 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks. It was a wonderful performance from an athlete who plays with a lot of heart. Hard to believe, but he has got better since last year.

Both Nuggets big men BJ Anthony and Antoine Tisby got into foul trouble. A rest on the bench would not have done them much harm with a crucial game against the Southland Sharks at the venue tomorrow afternoon.

Anthony still managed to amass 22 points and 13 rebounds. Tisby grabbed 13 boards as well and banked 17 points.

Oh, and Mark Dickel made 12 assists. The classy point guard control the tempo beautifully.

Kenny Gabriel led the scoring for the visitors with 21 points.

On Friday night the Nelson Giants defeat the Waikato Pistons 89-75 in Nelson and the Southland Sharks had an enormous 105-83 win against Taranaki.
