Otago Nuggets import Scott O'Gallagher plans to play in the National Basketball League next season. He is just not sure for which team he will play.

The talented point guard has made no secret of the fact he would love that team to be the Nuggets. O'Gallagher and his family have fallen in love with Dunedin since shifting here from Portland, Oregon early this year and they are desperate to stay.

O'Gallagher has applied for a job at Basketball Otago as the director of development and expects to find out whether he has been successful today.

"I would love to get this job because either way I will be back playing in this league next year," he said.

"But I want to stay here. I've made that clear since the first day here and nothing has changed.

"We haven't missed home one bit and we love it here. The lifestyle suits us; it is laid-back, not as fast and the people are nice."

O'Gallagher said he had received approaches from some other New Zealand franchises but his first choice would be to remain in Dunedin and play for the Nuggets.

If he was to become a New Zealand citizen he would qualify to play as a non-restricted player in the league which would free up an import slot for the Nuggets.

That would be a significant competitive advantage for the struggling franchise.

When contacted, Basketball Otago general manager Markham Brown said he was not a position to comment about the director of development role. He expects to make an announcement later in the week.

The Nuggets will round out the season with two away games against the Taranaki Mountain Airs on Friday and the Waikato Pistons on Saturday.

The Nuggets are out of play-off contention but O'Gallagher hopes the team will take the opportunity to finish the season well.

"The last two games will show a lot about our character. Hopefully, none of the guys will just be looking to punch their ticket, get in and get out and think about other things. We really have to build and improve, so we've been looking at that at practice. We have to continue to play hard and get the most out of ourselves."
