Emerging Tall Ferns point guard Renee Johnson harbours hopes of getting a scholarship to play basketball in the United States.
Multi-talented athlete Renee Johnson divides her time between basketball, netball, touch and probably a bit of homework.

But for the year-11 Kaikorai College pupil it must be hard to concentrate on school work when there are hoops to shoot.

The promising point guard was named in the Emerging Tall Ferns earlier this month after attending a training camp in Auckland during the school holidays.

The 15-year-old will join the rest of the squad in Hamilton next month for a two-day camp.

In July the team heads to Perth to compete in a tournament and carry on its preparations for the 2009 under-17 Oceania Championship.

But before she slips on the national singlet she will be suiting up for the Otago under-17 girls team and competing in the under-17 nationals at the Edgar Centre.

The tournament begins on Friday and Otago boasts a strong line-up, which includes Junior Tall Fern Samara Gallaher and former Emerging Tall Fern Caroline Crowley.

"We came first in the South Island [championship] so hopefully we will do well," she enthused.

"A lot of the North Island teams are really good. Hopefully, we'll make the top eight."

Renee looks up to her teammates and would like to follow in Samara's footsteps and make the Junior Tall Ferns.

But she does not plan to stop there.

"I'd like to get to the top. It would be really cool to get a scholarship from America."

Renee hones her shooting skills playing netball and has represented Dunedin age-group representative teams.

The all-rounder has also represented Otago in age-group touch teams.

But basketball is her first love and she enjoys going to the Otago Nuggets' home games.

She rates American centre Antoine Tisby but thought fellow countryman Lemar Gayle was "a ball hog".

Tall Black point guard Lindsay Tait is also a bit of a favourite.
