If you ask Brendon Polyblank, the Otago Nuggets let the pressure off during the third quarter.

It seems a little picky given his side dispatched the Waikato Pistons 97-74 to go to the top of the National Basketball League with five wins from five games.

But then again, the 2013 version of the Nuggets is more hard-nosed than its predecessors. This team plays uncompromising defence and, when it sees its standards dropping, no-one is about to shrug his shoulders just because it has almost cracked 100 points and had another comfortable win.

''The second half we came out and we weren't very cohesive,'' Polyblank said.

''We started to play their style. It was just really loose and it seemed like we were not playing together very well and not running our offence well.

''Once we started to play better defence and tightened up a little bit, we we're much better.''

The team led by 21 at halftime so it could be forgiven for a drop in intensity. The game was basically over as a contest.

''It is hard but once you have a team down you step on their throats and don't settle for a lead of 20 - get it up to 40.''

The Nuggets attracted their best crowd of the season, with more than 1800 turning out at the Lion Foundation Arena.

They watched delighted as the home side shot out to a 19-5 led. The best the Pistons could manage was some weak defence and even worse shooting.

Mark Dickel was electric on defence. He grabbed 13 rebounds, five steals and played his part at the other end with 10 assists and five points. It was fantastic performance from the veteran.

BJ Anthony made himself available in the paint all night and bustled his way to the hoop for 26 points.

Akeem Wright matched his offensive production with 26 points of his own.

Shooting guard Hayden Allen (13) took his opportunities from the outside and Antoine Tisby chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds.

American combination guard Garrius Holloman hit a trio of three-pointers and scored 11 of the Pistons' 17 points in the first quarter. But the Nuggets' superiority in the paint meant they took a 31-17 lead into the break.

Tai Webster got himself more involved in the second period and made some nice drives to the hoop for the visiting side.

Nuggets forward Sam Timmins (15) made his NBL debut with three minutes remaining in the half. It was announced over the public address system he was the youngest player to make his debut - demoting Dickel, who made his debut as a 16-year-old.

The teenager registered a block moments after getting on the court and returned at the end of the fourth quarter.

Dickel made sure the youngster got the ball under the hoop and Timmins made an easy lay-up which brought the crowd to its feet.

''It was pretty cool,'' Timmins said.

''I was gutted when I missed my first shot but I got one in the end.

''It is pretty weird having everyone come up and ask for my autograph. I'm gonna have to get used to it, I suppose.''

Yep. At 2.04m, the Otago Boys' High School pupil can expect a lot more nights on the hardwood.

The Nuggets led 55-34 at halftime and, as long as Dickel was calling the shots on defence, there was more chance of Gerry Brownlee breaking 4min for the mile than the Nuggets giving up all of their enormous lead.

With 10 minutes remaining, the Nuggets still had a comfortable 19-point lead and closed the game out.

Zack Atkinson was outstanding for the Pistons and strengthened his grip at the top of the league for rebounding with 21 rebounds and 24 points.

Holloman had his moments with 20 points and Alexander Marco added 13 points.
