The New Zealand Breakers have found a replacement for Corey Webster, but the club is not ready to give up on its talented youngster despite a second positive drugs test.

The Breakers have signed Melbourne Tigers guard Daryl Corletto for the season but say there is still room for both players on the roster.

Webster (22) returned a positive test for a synthetic form of cannabis but plans to defend the case at a hearing in the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Sydney.

He tested positive for cannabis while playing in the New Zealand NBL last year and was banned for two months. The Breakers stuck by Webster but, if he is found guilty of a second offence, he faces a ban of between one and four years which will test the club's loyalty.

Breakers general manager Richard Clarke said the club would wait for the outcome of the hearing before making a decision about Webster's future and could not comment on the case.

However, Clarke said he had known Webster since he was a teenager and had some sympathy for the young man who he said had made a "dumb decision.

"It is a difficult position for us," Clarke said.

"While we are supportive and sympathetic for Corey as a person, as a player he needs to go through this process because he has returned this positive test and there are rules and processes in place.

"He has made a dumb decision and is going to have to face the consequences but I do feel for him.

"Corey is a good kid. I've known him since he was 15 or 16 and have gone into bat for him on a number of occasions, including last year.

He is such a talent and it would be a real shame if he lost the opportunity to realise that talent.

The Breakers get their pre-season campaign under way against the Wollongong Hawks in Hamilton tomorrow and in Mount Maunganui on Saturday before heading to Brisbane and the Gold Coast to compete in the iiNet Championship pre-season tournament.

The club is expected to make some announcements about its playing schedule and plans concerning Vector Arena at its season launch in Auckland today.

• Otago Daily Times basketball writer Adrian Seconi will travel to Brisbane and the Gold Coast to provide coverage of the iiNet Championship pre-season tournament.
