Slee takes 800m win by a hair

Logan Slee emerged victorious in a tight tussle at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

Just 0.23 seconds separated him and Josh Hou in the 800m.

The two Hill City-University runners finished nine seconds ahead of the rest of the field, but it was Slee who edged home first in 2min 00.46sec.

That proved the closest result of the day.

In both the 100m and 200m, HCU’s Joe Crook, originally of Christchurch, gave North Otago’s Schuyler Orr a tough challenge.

Orr won the 100m in 11.21sec, 0.09sec ahead of Crook.

Orr also claimed the 200m in 23.24sec, Crook trailing close behind in 23.39sec.

Sophie Napper (HCU) and Joccoaa Palmer (Taieri) were the fastest women in each event, running 12.50sec and 26.62sec respectively.

Kirk Madgwick (HCU) ran 4min 25.07sec to claim a convincing win in the 1500m.

Trentham’s Finn Molloy won the 3000m in 9min 18.65sec.

In the field, Taieri’s Emma McKay won the women’s triple jump with 10.67m.

Invercargill’s Sam McDonald won the men’s triple jump with 12.20m.

Taieri’s Jade Zaia threw 46.03m to win the men’s discus, while Shyah Beattie’s 36.67m edged Nirvana Hepi-Breen in the women’s competition.

Dyani Shepherd-Oates (Taieri) won the women’s hammer in 48.30m, while Hugh McLeod-Jones (HCU) won a close battle with Michael Scholten in the hammer, winning with 39.72m.
