Athletics: National champs schedule released

Athletics New Zealand (ANZ) has released the schedule for next year's national track and field championships in Dunedin.

The championships, which double as an Olympic qualifier, will get under way at the Caledonian Ground on March 4 with the 300m hurdles, 400m hurdles heats and long jump.

It will be followed by 100m heats, before the first final - the 3000m track walk - at 11.15am. The 100m, 3000m and 5000m finals will also be held on the first of three days of competition.

All field events are straight finals, and one of the most anticipated events on day one is the men's shot put, in which heavyweights Tom Walsh and Jacko Gill should go head to head.

Day two will open with the women's under-18 2000m steeplechase final and hammer throw.

Felix McDonald and Christina Ashton, two of Otago's best hurdlers, will be in action in the 110m and 100m hurdles heats on the Saturday morning, before the 1500m heats are held either side of lunch.

That will give the Dunedin crowd a chance to see New Zealand 1500m gun Nick Willis in action, provided he is fit and not chasing competition in Australia the same weekend.

There has been speculation that some of the country's best athletes will not be in Dunedin, due to a date clash with the Melbourne World Challenge, but ANZ high performance director Scott Goodman told the Otago Daily Times in May he was confident they would be in town.

Short hurdles finals will be held on day two, as well as the 400m, 800m, women's under-20 and senior 3000m steeplechase, and 4x100m relays.

Valerie Adams could be the main drawcard in the field on the final day, when the women's shot put final is held at 1.30pm.

The double Olympic and three-time Commonwealth Games champion is still coming back from surgery on her right elbow and left shoulder.

She pulled out of the world championships in Beijing in August after a string of disappointing results in the lead-up.

However, she is working hard to get back to her best for next year's Rio Olympics, and is expected to compete in Dunedin.

All track events on the Sunday are finals, including the 300m and 400m hurdles, 200m and 1500m.

Entries are expected to open for the championships in the middle of next month.

Athletes wanting to compete must have completed a standard performance between May 1 and February 17. The standards can be viewed on ANZ's website.
