Ariki Cup latest honour for Greene

Becky Greene has capped off an already sensational year.

The Hill City-University athlete is sporting even more success after winning the Ariki Cup for athlete of the year at the Athletic Otago awards.

Greene, who also won the Otago Senior Selectors Trophy for senior summer athlete of the year, has been in rich form, breaking the New Zealand resident record at the Cooks Classic, and is heading overseas in a big to qualify for the world championships.

Leith long-distance runner Janus Staufenberg picked up the Chip Dunckley Memorial Trophy for winter male athlete of the year, and Ariki’s Catherine Lund was named female athlete of the year (T.J King Trophy) and junior summer athlete of the year (Bruce Cowan Trophy).

Paralympian Holly Robinson was named para athlete of the year, and Jim Blair, who won triple gold at the world masters indoor championships, was named top all-round masters athlete.

Wanaka’s Michael Beable claimed the Trevor Bent Memorial Trophy for coach of the year (performance). He coached Otago long jumper Shay Veitch, who jumped 7.99m at the Sir Graham Douglas International, to be ranked second-equal nationally and second in Oceania, and to an Otago record.

Alan Moir won the Norrie Jefferson Trophy for development coach of the year.

Two stalwarts were also recognised for their contributions to Athletics Otago off the track and field.

Joan Merrilees was named official of the year (Ron Cain Trophy), and Paula Cotter was awarded the Sport Otago Trophy for her contribution to athletics.
