It was fourth time lucky for the Otago primary schools athletics championships yesterday.

The meeting, which has been running since the 1930s, was held at the Caledonian Ground yesterday, having been postponed due to bad weather on three occasions.

About 800 pupils from 89 schools competed at the championships, at which seven records were broken. Anderson's Bay School's Noah McDowall jumped 4.75m to smash the under-12 boys long jump record by 14cm, while Eva-Luna Sander jumped 4.43m to break the under-12 girls long jump record by 17cm.

Nirvana Hepi-Breen threw 29.46m to break the under-12 girls discus record, which was previously 25.04m.

Wanaka Primary School's Henry Bowering ran 8.59sec to take 0.01sec off the under-10 60m sprint record, and Zoe Smith ran 2min 20.00sec to beat the year 7/8 girls 800m record by more than six seconds.

Two 200m relay records were broken. The Arrowtown Primary School under-11 girls ran 29.45sec, while East Taieri Primary School broke the under-10 girls record in its heat, running 30.68sec.

The East Taieri team was unable to back up, however, finishing second to Kaikorai Primary School in the final.
