While work keys were hung on the hook and people turned out to the Ascot Park Raceway for an end-of-year chill-out, Invercargill trainer Doug McLachlan was hard at work taking care of his harness race entrants.

It is something he has done for many, many years and one he intends to be doing well into the future.

Four generations of the McLachlan family were at the course yesterday afternoon, where the senior member of the family had two horses running: Franco Huntington in the second race, followed by Jenny Gump in the next race.

While there were no win celebrations from the 12-year-old gelding Franco Huntington or Jenny Gump, the veteran trainer from Myross Bush will still be celebrating his 78th birthday today with a smile on his face.

He said he had been associated with horses all his life and he wanted to carry on with his passion as long as he could.

At 78 years old, he still shoed the horses himself.

Franco Huntington gave the trainer his 200th win on November 22 alongside 268 second places and 267 third places.

Franco Huntington is a veteran alongside his trainer. The 11-year-old gelding had his 234th start last night. Alas it was not a win but he was competitive and should be running around again.

The weather held bright for the twilight meeting last night with a good crowd at the track for what was the biggest meeting for the Invercargill club this season.

The Invercargill Cup is among the richest races staged in Invercargill with $110,000 on offer, topping the 2022 prize by $10,000.
