The state of one gravel road in the district has been slammed as disgusting and the worst country road one woman has ever seen.

Suzane Paterson lives in Lime Hills, but visits the area frequently to see family.

Mr Paterson said she normally drove through Terrace Rd, an unsealed gravel road 5km out of Mataura, but was shocked by the disrepair it had fallen into.

"Mataura always had pothole-filled roads, but it was never as bad as it what it was the other day."

She said it would be hard to walk down the road, let alone drive.

"You couldn’t even push a child down a pram on the road.

"We drove down at 15kmh, trying to avoid the potholes — it was just disgusting," she said.

Mrs Paterson said the potholes were as deep as her ankle, and she was shocked by its condition.

"I’ve lived on country roads my whole life, and terrace road is the worst I’ve ever seen.

"It’s virtually flat, it shouldn’t have that amount of potholes," she said.

Gore District Council roading asset manager Murray Hasler said in a statement the council was aware of the subpar state of roads in the region.

"The Gore District Council takes the condition of our roads seriously.

"Terrace Rd and many other gravel roads in our district are below an acceptable standard for not only residents but also our roading team," he said.

Mr Hasler said there was funding from both the council and government to fix these roads, but they had not been able to do so due to the weather.

"The persistent wet weather we’ve experienced since autumn has severely restricted the work we can carry out on gravel roads and forced us to resort to temporary fixes," he said.

"This is not a permanent fix, but it alleviates the sometimes hazardous effects of the worst potholes until grading can be done.

"Unfortunately, we are still waiting for gravel roads to dry out enough to get the grader on them."
