Competed for by pupils from the Dunedin Catholic Diocese’s four high schools, this year’s competition — in the event’s 79th year — drew 80 pupils last weekend.
St Kevin’s in Oamaru, Trinity Catholic College in Dunedin, Verdon College in Invercargill and St Peter’s College Gore took to the stage to compete in six categories including scripture, impromptu speech and debate.
St Peter’s director of religious studies Brendan Terry said students were "really chuffed" by the win. "It is a fierce competition with great camaraderie and it is thrilling to win," he said.
Each high school has a turn at hosting the event and this year it was St Peter’s College.
"It is a special event for Catholic education in the South. Great development for the students not only in terms of skills but relationships between the schools," he said.
St Peter’s pupils who won in their section included Daniel Kovarski for best speaker in the senior debates and Sophie Aynsley for her impromptu speech.
