The first ever Quad Nations tournament was a resounding success and hopefully a start of a new tradition in Gore.

West Gore School pupils Mills Walker, 11, and Mitchell Newton, 10, had organised the primary schools tournament as a part of a school project.

On Wednesday, not only did their hard work pay off with a successful event, but they also walked away with the Quad Nations shield after their team (pictured) won.

Mills said he was happy with how it went.

"It was smooth, [it] went pretty good."

Teacher Rachael Klaus said the event came together well, with a bit of luck avoiding the rain.

"We’ve been so worried about the weather, but we had a perfect little break in the weather for it to take place. "The boys were amazing, [and there was] such a good turnout — just fabulous."

The team were coached by David Walker and Cody Waihape.

Mr Waihape said they performed when it counted.

"They really rose to the occasion.

"Late game, we weren’t really tackling right, but they really owned it.

"The team rallied and scored a try in the last minute."

He hoped the tournament became an annual event for the schools to encourage more children to get active and try rugby out.

"There’s definitely a lot of promise.

"Even kids who haven’t played, it brings them into rugby.

"Tournaments like this, where they might not be interested in club rugby, but they can play with their peers and try it out, get them on the field."
