Over 20 Broadway songs will be performed by Gore Musical Theatre (GMT) at its forthcoming show.

"Spotlight on Broadway" will premiere at the SBS St James Theatre on August 9.

Director Stephanie Burke said the show appealed to all ages.

"When I started thinking about the show my philosophy was that everybody has got that one song that they’ve always wanted to perform but they just haven’t had the opportunity. I wanted this show to be an opportunity for people to perform that number."

Many singers would now get the chance to perform a song they might never have had the chance to perform otherwise, she said.

Being the director was "busy" but she "loved" the role.

"It’s probably my true passion in life. It fills my cup."

She had previously directed Wizard of Oz and Chicago for the GMT.

The 27-strong cast began rehearsals for the production in April.

"Everybody has been coming in at different stages and we’ll start putting it all together next week."

There were no lead roles in the show.

"There’s no star of the show. Everyone in the show is a star.

"Everybody shares at least one solo and they’re also all involved in chorus roles."

The production featured songs from Broadway shows such as ChessMatildaGrease and The Greatest Showman.

"Spotlight on Broadway" runs at the SBS St James Theatre from August 9 to 17.
