Paying for a safe bed night is one way to support the work of the Gore and Clutha Whānau Refuge, assistant manager Eileen Bootsma says.

The price of a safe bed night is $20 and covers the cost of one person staying in a whanau refuge safe house for a night.

The refuge has several safe houses throughout its area where families who are escaping unsafe living conditions can stay.

Mrs Bootsma said $20 was a small price to pay so a whanau could spend a night in a home where they felt safe.

"If we think about how much we spend on coffee in a week, if we had one less coffee a week that would be one bed night a month."

In July, the Gore and Clutha region staff dealt with 115 referrals, 47 of which were new clients.

Forty-eight safe night beds were used in July.

"It can be quiet some months and busier other months."

The group did not have storage facilities, so could not store items a family might need in an emergency situation.

However, by regularly checking the refuge’s social media sites, people could find out what needs the refuge had at that time.

"We’re really lucky down here. The community is really supportive," Mrs Bootsma said.
