ast weekend, attendees at an ADHD conference learned a lot, but above all else, they learned ADHD is not a deficit — it is a difference.

The conference was held at the Mataura Licensing Trust West Otago Community Centre in Tapanui on Saturday, and about 20 people attended.

It was organised through ADHD specialist Sarah McCall, who said the day was everything she wanted and more.

‘‘For the first time in this format, we were really pleased by the way that it went.

‘‘We had an amazing team of supporters who helped us with their energy and time and vision, they just ran with it and it was brilliant,’’ she said.

The feedback from the conference was similarly positive, with attendees sharing how much it helped with their journey, be it as someone with ADHD or someone with an ADHD person in their lives.

‘‘ADHD doesn’t just affect those diagnosed, but also their community, friends, school, colleagues.

‘‘That message needs to be widely broadcast, which is what we’re trying to do with Cecil’s Yarns.

‘‘We want to highlight these unseen barriers,’’ she said.

The conference, Mrs McCall said, was hopefully the first of many and some big opportunities were on the horizon.

‘‘It’s the first step of a very big, hairy, bold dream.

‘‘It’s being able to run in my own lane.

‘‘It’s a lifetime of all the study and the research, the training, being channelled through someone like me who lives the topic,’’ she said.

Mrs McCall said she has found her calling.

‘‘Some presenters, they have the learning, they have the information, but they’re a little dry.

‘‘My passion is to deliver ADHD in a way that is real, relatable, interactive and fun,’’ she said.

Mrs McCall said she was very happy with how the conference went and the glow of a successful event was carrying on.

‘‘It was a phenomenal experience, I’ll probably live off the dopamine from this for many weeks to come.’’
