Learning the importance of Anzac Day and remembering the fallen soldiers from a young age is the aim of an event in Invercargill this week.

He Waka Tuia will be holding the event "Tales of Remembrance" on Friday in celebration of Anzac Day.

Public engagement and administration lead Diana Golez said the day would start with a story time with historian Senga White who would bring Anzac stories to life, sharing tales of courage, remembrance and resilience.

A craft session would follow, where children would have the opportunity to create a soldier silhouette sand painting, using coloured sand and glue to reflect on the themes of remembrance and honour.

It was important to help children "learn about the Anzacs from a very young age", she said.

The event will be hosted along with the current He Waka Tuia’s exhibition "Heirloom".

Manager Sarah Brown said this was very much an artefact-based exhibition.

Objects selected from various collections such as Te Kupeka Tiaki Taoka Southern Regional Collections Trust, Te Hikoi in Riverton, and from the museums in Wyndham, Mataura, Gore and Bluff were included.

Some of the pieces were very fitting for the event as there are military uniforms and other items that tell the stories of families in the region.

“This exhibition shows how unique and different families and cultures are, and how they all intertwine into Southland’s history.

"It really is interesting to see how we all fit together.”

The "Tales of Remembrance" event will be held tomorrow from 1pm-4pm.

Entry is free.
