Police are asking the public to be vigilant after a spate of car thefts in Invercargill and Southland.

There had been a sharp increase in the number of vehicles being stolen. Early model Mazdas, Nissans and Toyotas were being targeted.

Police ask that owners of vehicles, particularly those mentioned, be vigilant ensuring their cars are locked and, if possible, securely parked overnight.

Consideration should be given to installing an immobiliser or an additional locking device.

Police believe a group of Invercargill youths was responsible for many of the thefts and recent burglaries targeting Invercargill and Winton vape stores.

Three of the group of youths were before the youth justice system and police were continuing to investigate and hold others responsible to account.

Police did not supply the exact number of cars stolen by the group. Many cars were being burnt.

Fire and Emergency NZ said for the two months from September 22 this year, the Invercargill station responded to four suspected suspicious mobile property fires that were referred or notified to police.

In the year to September 22 2022, the Invercargill station responded to 16 suspected suspicious mobile property fires that were referred or notified to police.

Car theft was a crime which caused a lot of inconvenience for many people.

One newly arrived Invercargill resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said offenders attempted to steal her Suzuki Cultus two weeks ago from a carpark in Forth St in the city.

Her driver’s window was smashed and the steering column dismantled in an apparent attempt to hotwire the vehicle.

The woman’s vehicle was one of many on the street damaged the sameevening.

She saw windows had been smashed in several vehicles.

She was unsure why the apparent attempt to steal the vehicle was unsuccessful.

The young woman’s vehicle was covered by insurance.

"But I’m annoyed that I have to pay the excess for something I didn’t do.

"It’s not my fault... I didn’t do anything to deserve it, but I am still suffering the consequences."

While nothing was removed from her car, she has been without transport while it was away being repaired.

"It’s a real inconvenience not having a car, especially with being new to Invercargill, I don’t know that many people here who can help me with transport when I need it.

"I’m having to walk everywhere. I’m lucky that I live centrally, but I am supposed be taking care of a friend’s cat at the moment, which has been a bit of a challenge."

Police were urging anyone witnessed any suspicious behaviour around vehicles should call 111 immediately.
