When one door closes another opens — this literally came true for eight former H&J Smith staff who launched Invercargill’s newest restaurant this week.

Euna co-owner Celia Wilson said she and chef Travis Martin, who were responsible for the department store’s catering operations, together with other staff members, decided to offer the city something different after hearing the store would close.

The Don St premises proved to be "the perfect venue" after Mr Martin spotted the unoccupied building after the announcement.

"It came up for lease and Euna was born."

"Euna", meaning victory, truth and unity, was chosen because the team wanted a name that echoed its contemporary European menu and the building’s historic architectural features.

Work started in September, involving long hours renovating the building’s interior after working for H&Js during the day, Ms Wilson said.

"After work we would come here and start demolishing, painting walls and decorating."

The eight owners, who call themselves "the family", wanted to offer a totally new experience to diners.

"Travis wanted an open kitchen ... to bring the customer experience into the kitchen is really important for us. There isn’t one anywhere in Southland."

Everything was made in-house, including bakery products and Mr Martin’s own maple-cured bacon, Ms Wilson said.

A soft opening on New Year’s Eve saw a steady stream of customers try out the new venue.

"Since then, we have been received so well by Southlanders it’s been incredible."

Euna officially opened on Tuesday.

While the fully licensed restaurant opens for breakfast at 8am, it closes at 3pm before reopening at 5pm for the adults-only five-course dinner session.

It was a long day, but "we love what we do and love to express that to others".

"It’s good food, good service and a good place to be," Ms Wilson said.
