The spirit of Burt Munro still lives on, especially in the people inspired by him.

Scooter builder and regular Burt Munro racer, Jeff Cameron, has built a Munro-inspired Indian "Scoot" Streamliner to race in the Southern Scooter Challenge.

"There's absolutely no escaping the legacy that was Burt Munro.

"You can't get away from it, especially in the motorcycling fraternity.

"He had the old Kiwi sort of can-do attitude when it came to motorcycles and motorcycling," Mr Cameron said.

The Hokitika-born, Dunedin-based builder has paid homage to the legendary racer by building his spectacular Indian "Scoot" Streamliner shell around a "mostly’' standard Suzuki SJ125e.

The unique bike is on display at E Hayes.

"I'd built the mould and everything for it and then had a bit of a look at it and decided that, no, that wasn't the right shape.

"So, I took the tail sticks and essentially re-did it a couple of times, because after I built the thing, I decided it was not the right shape.

"Before we fiberglassed, I looked at the mould and ended up building it in reverse," Mr Cameron said.

The 44-year-old built the scooter to race in the Southern Scooter Challenge on September 7, where

150 riders will travel from Stirling Point in Bluff to Queenstown.

The 220km ride is to support and raise funds for Hospice Southland.

"I wanted to get behind the Southern Scooter Challenge so I built this crazy thing.

"It will do 100kmh nicely enough and is a bit of a rocket once it gets going.

"I tried to keep it as close to Burt's, just a bit more compact," he said.

Mr Cameron had lost a few good friends over the years to cancer and praised Hospice Southland for the care and support they had provided to patients and their families over the years.

"I do hope the good people of Invercargill, Bluff and Southland in general will get out and support all of these brave riders, as well as the charity they are raising funds for, he said."
