Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark took his first trip outside the house last weekend after double heart bypass surgery in Dunedin in early January.

Deputy mayor Tom Campbell said the first venture proved to be a bit of a challenge for the mayor, but every day he was becoming a little better and a little stronger.

"That was quite a milestone for him to be out and about.

"You do feel very tired for the first month after the operation.

"He’s been told to avoid crowds. So he’s always going to try to stay away from huddles of people."

However he was having visitors call at home to see him.

"He’s just getting to that boundary where he’s been tired, but now really wanted to try get up, move around more and get out and walk further every day."

Mr Clark, 72, suffered a minor heart attack on the afternoon of December 27 and was originally taken to Invercargill Hospital.

He was transferred to Dunedin Hospital the next day and he received his bypass surgery about a week later.
