The judges of the Southland Business Excellence Awards are impressed with the calibre of applications for this year’s event, the Southland Business Chamber chief executive says.

Sheree Carey said they were thrilled with the number of businesses that applied for the awards.

There were 137 applications received over 13 categories.

"It’s really exciting.

"Some of the feedback that we had from the judges was they felt that the calibre of the applications was really strong and they did actually find it tough to choose from."

Due to that, many categories had more than the usual three finalists.

"I’m really happy with the range of different businesses.

"We’ve got different industries and businesses from across Southland — not only from Invercargill."

The awards were designed to celebrate the achievements of local businesses and recognise their contribution to the growth and success of Southland, she said.

"No matter if you are a small start-up or a large established business, all businesses were welcomed."

There were three categories introduced — Southland employer of the year, individual excellence in export and Southland small business of the year.

Ms Carey said there was also a record number of entries in the consumer services award category.

"It was really good to see that after Covid that sector kind of picked up, came back so strong.

"I guess the other point would be that, given the fact that we’re in a recession, and these businesses are nailing it, we should be really proud of what they’re doing."

The awards gala dinner will take place at Transport World, Invercargill, on September 15.
