An investigation is under way into the death of a 19-year-old remand prisoner at Invercargill Prison.
Police officers, including a photographer, went to the facility at 7.30am on September 27 - four weeks ago.
Prison director Daryl Tamati said today there was no indication that the death was suspicious.
"Our staff made every effort to save him, however they were unable to revive him."
Other men in the unit and staff were being provided with support, including access to chaplains and cultural support, he said.
"Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends."
A report has been prepared for the coroner, who will rule on the cause of death and whether the teen's name is released to media.
RNZ has approached the Department of Corrections for comment.
