Muttonbirds (titi) ride the currents near Solander Island. The Solander island chain, about 110km west of Bluff, was sighted by Captain James Cook on March 11, 1770, and named by him after Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander, one of the scientific crew aboard Cook's ship,
Endeavour. The geographic location of the islands — and the tough weather conditions — have discouraged attempts at permanent habitation.
