First work for city’s art trail unveiled

The first step — or drop — of a planned art trail around Invercargill was unveiled yesterday.

The Invercargill Public Art Trail Trust held a blessing and celebrated the installation of the Just Add Life yesterday from Arrowtown artist Shane Woolridge, which was placed in front of Invercargill Central Ltd in Esk St.

Trustee Joc O’Donnell said there was huge scope to create an art trail across the city, which would add vibrancy and interest for both locals and tourists.

"I had this theory that it couldn’t be too hard to pull together and get businesses and funders to contribute to it with a long-term view of in 20 years time to have significant sculptures in the city."

She said they were already planning for a second one.

Mr Woolridge said there was a lot of hard work involved to create the 5-tonne, over 4m sculpture.

It included aluminium from the Tiwai smelter, dunite from Greenhills Quarries and even some bricks from the old CBD, he said.

"There are 15, 16 different types of stone and material in the piece and a lot of them are old materials.

‘There's some old Invercargill bricks in there, some old paving, some old tarmac and its got all this history that I've brought in and it's kind of celebrating history in a drop of water.

"So that is why the piece is called Just Add Life because all of those memories and people who have gone, they're involved in there."
