A fundraising venture first hatched when The Beatles were at their peak is heading into retirement.

It may have outlasted the Fab Four but technology and modern living has caught up with the Lions’ Southland farm location books.

Three Lions clubs: Lumsden,Wyndham and Otautau, maintained the publication of the farm location maps since the first one was produced when Otautau Jaycees published a single sheet map of the Central-Western area in 1965.

"Mr Google might lead you to the street that the farm is on but it won’t provide a Rapid number; the rural address property identification," Wyndham Lions Club member, and combined farm location map committee treasurer Brian Gray said.

"A lot of trucking companies are telling us that they are still using the farm location maps because it’s easier to locate the address by the Rapid number rather than relying on online navigation tools."

As technology catches up and paper books go by the wayside the committee has decided to stop the farm location maps.

They had a few dozen books left and the committee is selling them off for $10 each with proceeds going to community projects. They can be bought through the Lumsden and Wyndham Lions groups.
